Partner Profile: Muzhgan Hashimi - Development of Handicrafts and Agriculture Organization of Afghanistan (DHAOA)
Name: Muzhgan Hashimi
*Province:* Baghlan
Muzhgan Hashimi, a 37-year-old former teacher and school principal, has been at the forefront of supporting Afghan women in Baghlan Province, she has served as the General Director of DHAOA, a women-led entrepreneurial development organization established in 2014. Despite the severe impact of the Muzhgan's leadership has been instrumental in reviving the organization’s activities with the support of UN Women.
Under her direction, DHAOA focuses on three main areas: training women in handicrafts to start home businesses, agricultural development for illiterate or non-working women, and ensuring access to education for women. The organization had been thriving before the 2022 ban, with various successful projects, including tailoring training, greenhouse initiatives, and beekeeping programs. However, the ban led to a drastic reduction in activities, forcing DHAOA to operate at 20% capacity with only eight core staff members working as volunteers.
DHAOA regained some momentum. This partnership provided essential training in strategic planning, safeguarding, and project implementation, which have since been integrated into the organization's operations. Despite limited funding, Muzhgan continues to support women in her community, providing hope and advocacy for women’s rights in Afghanistan.
